Bone Broth: I’m sure you’ve heard of it, thought it sounded questionable, maybe even tried it?
Today I am going to share with you 5 benefits of bone broth, than share my personal recipe on how I make it!
5 Benefits of Bone Broth:
- GOOD FOR YOUR GUT: this one is HUGE. there are so many ways that bone broth helps your gut. In fact, with all my gut health clients, bone broth plays a huge part in the healing process. It is easy to digest and soothing to the digestive system. Bone broth soothes the lining of the gastrointestinal tract, “seals” the lining of the gut, and can help heal food sensitives.
- HAIR, SKIN, NAILS & JOINT CARE: bone broth contains collagen which is not only good for your gut but for your hair, skin, nails & joints! Take collagen for a week (either in the form of broth or powder) and watch your nails grow right before your eyes!
- GOOD SOURCE OF AMINO ACIDS: one of the big ones being glutamine. When your body is broken down by disease or stress, glutamine can be a very helpful to supplement with. In this case, by drinking bone both you are getting in this essential nutrient. I’m a big of fan of getting nutrients from your food as much as possible so win-win here!
- RICH IN MINERALS: contains highly absorbable forms of calcium, magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, sulfer, and trace minerals which support the bones, adrenal glands, nervous system, gums and teeth.
- REDUCES INFLAMMATION: since inflammation is a key to an unhealthy body and disease, making sure we are taking the necessary steps to keep it at bay is important. Bone broth is easy to digest and creates an environment for nutrients to be absorbed into our body.
While you can buy bone broth, it can be more on the expensive side. By making your own, you can save a little money & season it to your liking!
Here is my personal recipe that I use + a few tips/tidbits:
- I use leftover bones & skin from an organic chicken that I roast. Since it is seasoned when I cook it, I just add bay leaf to my broth. You can use raw bones. If you do, make sure & add lots of spices to get a delicious flavor! When I am picking off the meat on the chicken I just throw the bones & scraps in the crockpot right away to start the broth.
- Add the chicken feet for extra collagen. You can also ask the butcher for the feet if you want.
- I like to simmer this for 24 hours in my crockpot. You can do it less if needed but make sure you cook it for a least 12 hours.
- Choose organic chicken & veggies if possible.
- You can also use beef or turkey bones.
How to use it:
- Any recipe that calls for bone, I like to use this!
- Drink it in a mug! I like to do this on a semi-regular basis. Especially during times of stress.
- Use it in place of water when cooking rice or quinoa.
