3 Healthier Drink Options To Buy At Your Grocery
Healthier Drink Options To Go!
Today we are talking about drink options when you’re out and about.
One of the important things to look at when buying a bottled drink is the sugar content. Most contain WAY more than we need. Growing up as a Pepsi girl, when I started my health journey I had to say bye-bye to that one. Nowadays when I drink something besides water it could be coffee, healthy lemonade, green juice or kombucha. (Although still working on loving the last one;) It works great if you can make your drinks at home and take with you, however that is not always an option, so today I am sharing three drinks you can pick up at your grocery that I have personally tried and liked.
Suja juices: these are fantastic. Organic, cold pressed. This is a brand I recommend if you can’t make your own. They have different flavors and I personally love the green ones. This company has also come out with many new varieties recently. Side note: The thing about juicing is while it is a great nutrient boost, relief for our digestive system, etc; it can also be unhealthy. If you juice mostly fruit, the sugar content will be high. Much more than we need. Since the fiber from the fruit is not there, it will be a sugar rush to our system. (Which is why I prefer smoothies or blending the fruit) Look at your ingredients and choose wisely. Click to learn more.
Bolthouse Farms-1915 Organic: This brand can often times be on sale at our grocery and I will occasionally pick one up. Although I prefer the Suja, this one is another good choice. Once again, check the sugar content.
Kombucha: This is a drink I have had a hard time coming to really like. It is a great option if you are craving something fizzy & carbonated. It also contains probiotics which are good for our gut. Kombucha can also contain high amounts of sugar. The one pictured above has 2 grams per serving, which is super!
There are many bottled drink options available. Just remember when you are buying them to check your labels. Stay away from the ones filled with sugar, artificial flavors & colors, preservatives and other unnecessary crap.

My Favorite Digestive Supplements + A GIVEAWAY!
Digestive Supplements + A GIVEAWAY
Today I am talking to you about supplements that I personally use to amp up my digestion! I’m also excited to host a giveaway of 2 products I use and love! But first I would like to define the meaning of the word supplement as I am using it in this particular blog post. That definition is: “something that enhances something else when added to it.”
As you know, digestive health is a big focus in my health coaching practice. Time and time again it is proven to us that having a healthy gut is crucial to our well being. As Hippocrates once said, “All disease begins in the gut.”
Now while I am a big believer in keeping your gut in tip top shape by nourishing it with proper foods, I also know that sometimes we need a little extra help and most everyone can benefit from taking a probiotic on a regular basis. {This post is specifically talking about supplements, not the food/nutrition side of a healthy gut.}
Here are 3 of my favorites digestive aids:
- Probiotic: Our gut needs “good bacteria” to thrive. Probiotics can be consumed as fermented foods. That being said, most people do not get enough of these foods in their diet which is why I recommend taking a probiotic. Daily if you are in the healing stage; every other day if you are in the maintenance stage. This is a brand I have tried and like.
- Essential oils: Ginger, peppermint, fennel, lavender & coriander are a few that benefit your digestion. For the days when maybe you have overindulged, or accidentally ate something that doesn’t agree with you. I carry a blend with me when I travel that really helps soothe my belly. It’s easy for your stomach to get “off” when you travel and this oil helps with that. (Side Note: I do not sell or advocate for just one brand of oils. There are several good companies that I trust and personally use a variety of brands. Find one that works for you. Research it and buy from a local distributor if possible.)
- Ginger Tea: has soothing properties which are good for an upset stomach and can help relieve nausea.
GIVEAWAY TIME:
What: 1 bottle of PB8 Probiotic and 1 bottle of DigestZen from doTERRA

3 Ways To Improve Your Digestion In The Next Week
As you know, a healthy gut is a special focus in my health coaching practice. For me, healing my gut changed everything! Day after day millions of people around the world struggle with some type of digestion problem: Gas, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, upset stomach, acid reflux; the list goes on and on. Poor digestive health weakens the immune system, causes nutritional deficiencies and hormonal imbalances and weakens all organ function. Not to mention the emotional toll it has on a human dealing with these problems. The good news? Most of these symptoms can disappear by addressing your diet & lifestyle choices! So let’s dive into what actually is normal digestion and 3 tips to improve it in the next week!
The Wonder of Zucchini
Zucchini!
It’s summertime, my garden is flourishing and zucchini season has begun! For those of you who do garden, you know what I mean when I say “zucchini season has begun”. They seem to produce lots and lots and you might find yourself overwhelmed with it all! I want to touch briefly why zucchini is so awesome and then give you a few ideas on what to do with it! (Zucchini Pie anyone?!)
Health Benefits of Zucchini
- Excellent source of Vitamins A, C and B (+ folate).
- Antioxidants=healthy immune system
- Potassium: 1 cup of cooked zucchini gives your more than 15% of your daily value.
- Excellent source of Dietary Fiber: plus it is very hydrating which is good for the digestive tract. A perfect veggie for constipation relief an can actually help with diarrhea as well.
Zucchini has a high water content, making it low in sugar and carbs. Therefore a perfect weight loss vegetable. Along with the high water content comes good dietary fiber..which will help keep things moving along and soothe digestive distress due to the electrolytes in this vegetable. Pretty Cool!
What to do with zucchini
- Grill it! Cut into wedges, add oil & salt. Grill on each side a 3-4 minutes.
- Bake with it! Zucchini bread or muffins.
- Zucchini Pie! Sounds weird I know but it is TOTALLY awesome! Like a custard!
- Add to salsas! Here is one of my favorite recipes, you can add some to it.
- Zucchini noodles! Delicious in a lasagna!
- Stir-fry! Add some garlic and onions with it. Crack a couple eggs in the pan for protein.
- Zucchini Fries! ABSOLUTELY amazing! We couldn’t eat them fast enough! Drizzle oil and spices over them, roast in 450 degree oven! Broil for 2-3 minutes for crispiness!
I love hearing from my readers! Let me know in the comment box below how you use your zucchini!
The Gluten-Free Life: Just Another Fad?
Hey guys! As you know, my special focus in my practice is digestive health. For me, healing my gut changed everything!
Gluten has become a popular topic in the news, do I eat it or do I not? If you are having digestive issues, there’s a good chance that you will benefit from eliminating gluten for a time. That’s not saying you can’t ever have it again! Since my gut is in a much better place, I can handle small amounts of gluten from time to time. (Freshly ground whole wheat and sprouted grains)
Today my friend and fellow Health Coach Jenna over at Healthier Notions is sharing her thoughts on this particular subject.
Let’s Talk Gluten.
Gluten is a protein that is found in wheat, rye, kamut, barley, spelt, and some oats. It is formed when the two proteins called Gliadin and Glutenin are combined with water. Gluten is touch and rubbery, and responsible for allowing bread o stretch and rise. Chances are you eat a lot of gluten, as the standard western diet consists of pizza, pasta, bread (to find out what is wrong with supermarket bread click HERE) , and processed foods- all very high in gluten.
Just Another Fad?
I know it seems like everyone is talking about going “gluten-free” and critics accuse it of being the new “fat-free” fad. And they are not entirely wrong. Food companies have indeed taken this opportunity to shell out tons of processed, sugary, crap food that are marketed as “gluten-free”.
Don’t buy into it, folks. If you want to live a gluten-free lifestyle, stick to real, whole foods. If you do this you can’t lose.
I have personally found so much success with being gluten-free. It wasn’t until I made this switch that I ditched the extra five-ten stubborn pounds, my brain fog hit the road, and my recurring rash completely disappeared.
So although being gluten-free can seem like the newest fad, this is much more serious than just a quick diet to lose weight. But if weight gain is your goal, eating gluten will sure get you there quickly.
Why Gluten Can Be Harmful:
Gluten intolerance and sensitivity affects millions of Americans, most of whom are unaware. These people complain of bloating, migraines, an inability to lose weight, irritable bowel syndrome, constipation, rashes, and more. Many times this is simply an allergic reaction to gluten.
According to a review in The New England Journal of Medicine, there are 55 diseases that can be caused by eating gluten. (i) These include irritable bowel syndrome, cancer, osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, multiple sclerosis, and almost all other autoimmune diseases. Gluten is also linked to anxiety, depression, (ii) schizophrenia, dementia, as well as autism. (iii)
Gluten is problematic for people with celiac disease, and for those with gluten sensitivities. Celiac disease is the most extreme, affecting an estimated three million Americans. (iv) A person with celiac disease is completely gluten intolerant and must eliminate gluten entirely from their diet.
The only way to find out if you have celiac disease is to get tested. The blood test is about 95% accurate, and it’s advised to get a biopsy to confirm. An important fact to remember is that you must be eating gluten for the test to be accurate. The removal of gluten for people with celiac disease must be a habit maintained for life.
Gluten is also detrimental to those with gluten sensitivity. It’s estimated that one-third of the American population is gluten sensitive. These people include those who have tested negative for celiac disease but have relief from problematic symptoms when gluten is avoided.
If you suffer from bloating, irritable bowel syndrome, rashes, joint pain, arthritis, depression, anxiety, migraines, constipation, or the inability to lose weight, I encourage you to go at least ten days without gluten to see if it could be the cause.
So What Are My Alternatives?
Your options are really limitless on this one! There are so many naturally gluten-free foods that are full of fiber and other beneficial vitamins and minerals.
Naturally Gluten-Free Foods:
- brown rice
- millet
- kasha
- gluten-free oats
- quinoa
- fruits
- vegetables
- nuts/seeds
- beans
- most dairy
- eggs
- fish, poultry, meat
- herbs
Beware of:
-Barley labeled under malt, malt flavoring, malt vinegar, and brewer’s yeast.
– distilled vinegar
-soy sauce
Once again, remember to be a label detective. It’s very easy for gluten to hide in processed items and condiments, so the more you stick to real, whole foods, the easier it will be to avoid.
Happy to be Gluten-Free,
Health Coach Jenna

Drinking Warm Lemon Water Changed My Life! Could It Change Yours?
When I started Nutrition School back in 2013, one of the recommendations I got was to start drinking warm lemon water in the morning. Everyone was doing it and the information I had read on it seemed like a good thing to try so I added it to my morning routine, not realizing how much I would come to love it! 2 1/2 years later it is still something I do EVERY SINGLE DAY and recommend to all my clients! In fact, my morning feels off if I don’t do it! It has helped me on my journey of healing my gut and has created a ritual that is both calming & rejuvenating to my soul. Listed below are some health benefits of lemons and some tidbits about this ever popular morning habit.
- Lemon is an excellent and rich source of vitamin C, an essential nutrient that protects the body against immune system deficiencies
- Lemons contain pectin fiber which is very beneficial for colon health and also serves as a powerful antibacterial
- It balances maintain the pH levels in the body
- Having warm lemon juice early in the morning helps flush out toxins
- Aids digestion and encourages the production of bile
- A great source citric acid, potassium, calcium, phosphorus and magnesium
- Helps prevent the growth and multiplication of pathogenic bacteria that cause infections and diseases
- Reduces pain and inflammation in joints and knees as it dissolves uric acid
- It helps cure the common cold
- The potassium content in lemon helps nourish brain and nerve cells
- Balances the calcium and oxygen levels in the liver In case of a heart burn, taking a glass of concentrated lemon juice can give relief
- It is of immense benefit to the skin and it prevents the formation of wrinkles and acne
- Maintains the health of the eyes and helps fight against eye problems
- Aids in the production of digestive juices
- Lemon juice helps replenish body salts especially after a strenuous workout session
Try It!
Cut a nice slice out of an organic lemon, squeeze and drop it into your favorite mug . Fill the mug with water, half boiling and half cold to create that perfect warm temperature. If you’re lemon is not organic, just squeeze the juice out. Do not put the whole slice in there, as there is a waxy coating on the lemon, not to mention the pesticides that we don’t want to ingest. Go find your favorite chair, a blanket, your Bible and slowly enjoy your cup of warm lemon water! (That’s my favorite way:)
3 Ways to Boost Immunity Over the Holidays
The months of November and December can be quite hectic for people! From parties & shopping to end of the year work stuff, the stress of hosting the perfect holiday dinner, lack of sleep and traveling can make the holidays a stressful time. We can end up with a few extra pounds, exhausted, stressed out and sick. It’s quite important to maintain and boost our body’s immunity during this time.
The best way to boost up our immune system is through our food choices, rest and additional supplements if necessary! “Food is Medicine” Fruits and vegetables are immune powerhouses, each containing a different unique set of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. Eating a variety of them is a sure way to get a sufficient amount of these essential health supporting elements.
3 Daily Action Steps To Boost Immunity
- Start your day with warm lemon water. It is a great immune builder and aids digestion. It also helps balance your pH levels and flush out toxins. It is important to stay hydrated! Water and herbal teas are my favorite things to drink throughout the day. Aim to drink at least 1/2 your body weight in oz. (Ideally I recommend drinking 1 liter (33.8) oz of water per 50 lbs of body weight)
- Make half of your plate vegetables. You just can’t even hardly explain how important the role of vegetables play in keeping our body in tip top shape. Eat a variety of kinds and fix them different ways to get different properties of vitamins & minerals. Example: raw, steamed, cooked, sauteed or roasted.
- Stay away from processed foods/sugars/breads. These wreak havoc on our systems. They are filled with chemicals that our bodies must fight off. When we are already putting our body under extra stress, it is a good idea to take extra steps to nourish ourselves. That will help relieve some of the work your body has to do.
Bonus tip
- Supplement if necessary. Take a digestive enzyme before consuming a heavy meal, keep your gut healthy with probiotics, include garlic to help fight off colds and to boost immune function and remember to take your multi-vitamin and fish oil. I also recommend taking a Vitamin D supplement as well. Most of us are deficient and this will help ward of the “wintertime blues”.

All in all, relax and ENJOY the beauty of the season!
Chai Tea Latte
A chai tea latte just goes perfect with that chilly weather, a good book and your favorite blanket. Never had chai tea? It is slightly spicy, full of antioxidants, promotes digestion and smells amazing!
Road Trip Snacks
I love to travel. My husband’s family lives 15 hours away and we usually make at least 1 trip a year back there. In the car. Which makes for a long day of sitting. By the time we get there, it feels like I am really tired (which seems odd considering I can sleep literally the whole way there) and my belly isn’t usually feeling the best.
I always make sure to pack healthy snacks and a few other essentials along for the ride! Posted below is what I took with me on a recent trip.
Fresh Cut Vegetables: Always a good option. You can make guacamole to dip them in or if your body can handle dairy, get some organic sour cream and add in spices (onion, garlic, parsley, dill, pink salt) to make your own dip!
Homemade Trail Mix: Recipe Here
Larabars: I love these bars! Although high in sugar, the sugar comes from dates which I personally love. There are usually very few ingredients in these bars and they are always WHOLE foods! You can also get a variety of flavors! Score! (photo from Vitacost.com)
Dark Chocolate: One of my favorites.
Water: lots and lots! 🙂 Fill up a (stainless steel or glass) bottle and bring an extra gallon to fill it up with later!
Last but not least is my DigestZen oil from doTERRA. My stomach usually feels a little bloated after a long day in the car and this oil offers some relief.
